Partnership Working to Support Special Educational Needs & Disabilities

  • Rona Tutt - Consultant, writer, researcher and former President of NAHT

July 2012 | 144 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd
In order to achieve the best outcomes for all children and young people, schools must work in partnership with students, parents, other professionals and the wider community. In this changing landscape of education, the notion of the traditional school no longer exists. Partnership Working to Support Special Educational Needs & Disabilities looks at what is possible in this exciting new world, and how some teachers are putting into practice the best principles of multi-agency working.

Supporting children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in this context is more vital than ever, as more children are being diagnosed with additional needs, and those working with children are aware of the need to ensure every individual is given the maximum opportunity to develop to their full potential.

This book examines how partnership working affects those children with SEND by considering:

  • the diversity of additional needs;
  • specialist schools;
  • partnership working with special schools;
  • partnership working with groups of schools;
  • schools and other services working together;
  • children's centers;
  • a wide range of other services for children, young people and families.

Filled with case studies of best practice from real schools, this book is a must-have for those looking at how to work together to achieve positive outcomes for all.

I ordered this thinking it would fulfil the person-centred planning component of my disability studies class. However, it was too focused on school settings. Nonetheless, the book is a very useful resource, though not for what I needed. In the end, I opted for an Inclusion Press publication on PCP.

A useful text to help students to understand the agencies who work with children with SEN and disabilities.

As a Course Leader for the National Award SENCo, I am constantly on the look out for materials which are at once based provide a sound theorethical foundation while also enabling learners to access practical strategies. Rona Tutt's publication provides precisely this balance in Partnership Working to Support Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. The book relies on straightforward accessible language to deliver a message of inclusion through partnership. This message is supported with the use of school based case studies, which are engaging and instructive. This book has been recommended to all students on the course to address the current Module on Working in Partnership.

Given the drive on SEND infomation and data required by OFSTED I think that this book is an essential requirement to ITE book lists. It is clear and consise, easy to read and really interesting. It gives information on a range of SEND support and different levels of partnership - a one-stop-shop for anyone wanting to find out about SEND. I will reccomend this book to students and colleagues in ITE and Professional studies

This book provides useful background information for the course, but does not really privide in depth academic commentary which is required at this level.
