This book is a really useful guide to recognising children with special needs in early years. The summaries of expectations at each major developmental stage in the main areas; communication, language and literacy, physical development, and personal, social and emotional development, along with suggestions for themed observations, provide good starting points to this process. Chapter 7 provides helpful guidance about how to analyse themed observations once completed, and the final chapter described the 'graduated response' to making additional provision for children who need it. Throughout, the 'points for practice' encourage a reflective and inclusive approach.
This is an excellent resource to support the early years foundation degree. It is packed with practical ideas for practitioners to use and adapt within their settings and with the children they work with. It also includes a DVD with photocopiable worksheets etc. Highly recommended.
