First Edition

March 2014 | 128 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd

Making sure that young children with special educational needs have the right support is a top priority for all early years settings, but spotting additional needs can be tricky. This book is the ultimate resource for busy practitioners, who want good, clear advice on what to look for and how to set up the necessary provision.

From an award-winning author team, the advice contained here will empower you, and give you the confidence to identify and plan for the needs of every child in your care.

Topics discussed in chapters are as follows:

  • Observation and assessment of needs
  • Physical development, and how to spot problems
  • Communication, language and literacy, and how to spot difficulties
  • Personal, social and emotional development, in line with the holistic child emphasis of the EYFS

The book also includes case studies of children between 0 to 5 years, sample policies and lots of reproducible material, on the CD-Rom that comes with the book

Suitable for all early years students and practitioners, this book reminds the reader that all children require additional support at some stage, and that providing it is an essential part of good practice.

The book provides relevant and easy links to practice. This makes it easy for students to implement supports and interventions when they go on placement and work with children with additional needs. the book also provides an overview of child development and how children with additional needs may delayed in reaching milestones. The book is easily accessable for students and is well suited for an applied course in Early Childhood Care and Education.

This book is a really useful guide to recognising children with special needs in early years. The summaries of expectations at each major developmental stage in the main areas; communication, language and literacy, physical development, and personal, social and emotional development, along with suggestions for themed observations, provide good starting points to this process. Chapter 7 provides helpful guidance about how to analyse themed observations once completed, and the final chapter described the 'graduated response' to making additional provision for children who need it. Throughout, the 'points for practice' encourage a reflective and inclusive approach.

This is an excellent resource to support the early years foundation degree. It is packed with practical ideas for practitioners to use and adapt within their settings and with the children they work with. It also includes a DVD with photocopiable worksheets etc. Highly recommended.
