Meet the Math Consultants

 

Sara Delano Moore

A fourth-generation educator, Sara has been a mathematics teacher and teacher educator for more than 30 years. She has taught math and science to thousands of students in public, private, and summer-school settings. Sara has also taught mathematics methods classes at the university level and served as Director of the Kentucky Center for Middle School Academic Achievement. Most recently, Sara served as the Director of Mathematics & Science (the lead subject matter expert) at ETA hand2mind. Since 2012, Sara has led monthly webinars on teaching mathematics for conceptual understanding in the Building Understanding in Mathematics community at edweb.net/math, which reaches 8,000 subscribers. Sara has published many articles in NCTM journals and regularly presents about teaching mathematics at national and international conferences. Sara is the coauthor of Corwin’s Visible Learning for Mathematics, Grades K–12 (October 2016).

 

John Almarode

John Almarode

Dr. John Almarode is an Assistant Professor at the College of Education at James Madison University.  As a teacher, he has worked with all age groups in education, from pre-kindergarteners to graduate students with a focus in mathematics and science. Throughout his career, Almarode has presented internationally, working alongside numerous teachers, school districts, and organizations, on development workshops, keynote addresses, and conference presentations – some of which have been presented to the United States Department of Education as well as the Office of Science and Technology Policy at The White House. His work includes topics relating to student engagement, evidence-based practices, creating enriched environments that promote learning, and designing classrooms with the brain in mind. Almarode currently holds a Doctoral Degree in Science Education from the University of Virginia, a Master’s Degree in Teaching with an emphasis in Gifted and Special Education, and a Bachelor’s Degree, with Honors, in Physics and Mathematics.

 

Joseph Assof

Joseph Assof is an 11th and 12th grade mathematics teacher and the math department lead at Health Sciences High and Middle College in San Diego, CA. He leads his department’s reform efforts to align to the Common Core Standards – with a focus on high quality instruction. He is a member of the San Diego County Math Leaders Task Force, whose mission is to support every student in meeting the rigorous expectations of the Common Core. Joseph’s classroom is featured in a number of Visible Learning for Mathematics, Grades K-12 videos

 

Connie Hamilton

Connie Hamilton Ed.S. has 25 years in education as teacher, instructional coach, elementary/secondary principal, and K-12 district administrator. In these roles, she has experience teaching elementary math, providing interventions, leading collaboration with teachers, selecting curricular materials, aligning instructional strategies that support mathematical thinking, and developing systems that provide coherent curriculum. Connie leads workshops for Visible Learning for Math, questioning, engagement, scaffolding, and feedback. Teachers describe her workshops as meaningful and engaging as she models quality instructional methods that can be used in the classroom tomorrow. She uses her deep understanding of pedagogy to develop and lead workshops that provide a learning experiences that provide a balance of research, theory, and useful application. Most of Connie's school year is spent facilitating classroom observations in a collaborative setting so teachers can learn from one another as they implement new strategies with students. In these groups, relevant and actionable feedback is modeled to support the teachers' professional growth.
